LearnDiscover new skills and effective attitudes
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
― Benjamin Franklin This is the essence of all of DF programming - to really learn, one must be actually involved. Social skills are best modeled; life skills require practice in the actual environment, and job skills need to be connected to hands-on work activities. DF also knows that desire is the best motivator – if a person is not interested in something, he is unlikely to retain it. As we structure programs and activities, we look to the heart-felt desires of the people we serve and create activities that reveal the things they want to do and to learn. It is not as easy as just asking; DF knows that people cannot choose wisely when there are activities they have never seen. To open the door to true choice, DF stretches the lives of people by introducing new concepts, new opportunities, and then watch what intrigues them. Little by little, an interesting life is born as individuals with disabilities learn by immersion and experience. |
